Using Access 2013.
I have a query with search options. When I click to open it a box pops ups saying 'Enter Parameter Value' then below that it says 'Forms!SearchFI!AssignedNum' Is it possible to change that second part to just say 'Assigned Num'

I am NEW and know almost NOTHING and not sure what other info is needed to help me. Also I apologize if I don't use the correct terminology. Feel free to correct me, I do want to be able to learn and possibly help others in the future. Below is additional information that I hope helps.

First I created a form with unbound text boxes for 'Item' and 'assigned num' with a Run Query button.
Second I created a query showing the info I need. Under criteria (in design mode) I typed in this: Like "*" & [Forms]![SearchFI]![AssignedNum] & "*"
Third I made a report from the query and added it as a tab in a Navigation Form.
I am creating this so that I can search for an item or the assigned number associated with that item and see who has it checked out. All my other tables are set up with the information.

Any additional help is wonderful or even a link to a site with extra help. Thanks, hope its not too much.

The query is looking for that form/textbox, and can't find it (normally you'd wouldn't get prompted). Either it's not open or something is spelled wrong.

Paul,
So really I shouldn't be trying to change what that box says but fixing an error so that box doesnt even show up? Does this mean I would need to have my search form as a tab on my navigation form along side the report tab?

That's what I would do; most of us use forms to gather user input. I haven't used the navigation form. I typically open the criteria form, then open the report from there.

Eventually this whole data base is going to be used by multiple employees so when I did some reading at first the navigation form seemed to fit best. You have given me a good direction to go from here. Thanks!

Smig,

I apologize if you felt both posts where a waste of time. I am brand new as of today to posting on forums. Each thread though similar in nature did have a different question. I didn't realize until after receiving replies that the answer to both where the same.

Happy to help! Post back if you get stuck. Wasn't saying there was anything wrong with the navigation form, I just haven't used it yet. Old dog, new trick kind of thing. :p

Being new I asked two questions in different threads and they have ended up being the same answer. But I have gotten myself stuck. So this is where I am right now.

I created a Search form that opens a query based on what was typed into the text boxes on the search form. This is working is I open the search form on its own. What I want to do is have it as a tab on the navigation form. Where you open the navigation form, click on the search tab and it shows the search form. That part is working. What does not work is when I type in my search, click run query the parameter box shows up. I have tried changing the query criteria to the main page instead of the search f but that did not work. Do you know what I would need to do next in order to make this work?

Original that works as stand alone:
Like "*" & [Forms]![SearchF]![Item] & "*"

What I tried to make it work in navigation form (but did not work)
Like "*" & [Forms]![Main Page]![Item] & "*"

(Sorry that this same issue has ended up in two threads. It was the newby in me I am trying to learn better)

Does this help?

Navigation forms are quirky I've heard, so another thought is to right-click in the query criteria and click Build. That will let you navigate to the textbox and let Access build the syntax to refer to it.

The last thing I have to do with this part has got me stuck. So I have it working from my navigation page i click on the search tab, enter what im searching for and click run query. It now opens up the query with just the details I asked for.

What I would like it to do it actually open up a report based off of the query in another tab within the navigation form.

There are a few different things I have tried, none work so I think I am going about it the wrong way. Where should I start in order to set this up?

(the navigation form i used was the horizontal tabs and vertical tabs left if that matters)
