Normally you need to split your database into Front-end (Contains Forms/Queries/Reports) and a Back-end (Contains data tables only).

The second stage is to link all your tables in the front end.

Then place both .mdb files in a suitable network location that is accessible by all your users and has the same path.

for example your users might have access to the db set up as Drive S: and when you link the tables that is the mapped drive to use, otherwise you may have a user with a mapped drive of T: . When that user opens the front-end an error message would appear saying the files could not be found.

If the users have different mapping then either load the front-end on each users HD and link to the tables though their own local mapping. Or leave the db as one file on the network as no table linking will be required.

Simple as that!!!!!!

would you kindly amplify on your last point

Or leave the db as one file on the network as no table linking will be required.

Simple as that!!!!!!

Looking at the location and distance of the stations involved,i feel the last option will do in the mean time even though i do not fully understand it.Kindly amplify the above quoted?

Thank you very much for your quick response!

You do not have to slpit your database into front/back end. If there are problems linking out on site then using a non linked database could be the way to go. But it will not be as easy to maintain as a split database.

When opening your database up to a network you should consider the following topics:

Shared drives require user access. Therefore, you must work with your network admin to assure that everyone has proper permissions - and that the SHARE object (implied by the shared folder) has proper permissions. If this is a domain, it might pay off to make a domain-level group for the people who will need rights to the DB. Get your network and domain admins to grant all of the required permissions to the group, not to individuals. Then when you determine who they are, just make them members of the group.

Search this forum for topics in Securing a Database, Workgroup Security, and similar subject matter. Also database split, Front End, Back End, and the abbreviations FE/BE together and separately.

I have posted more than once on security. So have Pat Hartman, OldSoftBoss, and quit a few other "regulars." Lots of posters have hit the FE/BE topics. Rather than having us re-invent the wheel, I think you would do well to do some reading first.

Thanks Alot

Thanks The Doc And Dennisk.i Greatly Appreciate Your Input!
