Hi everyone, im new to this forum as well as MS Access. Over the past week or so Ive been reading through a lot of tutorials and watched a few videos on how to master Access. I've learned a handful of things, however its not enough, so i need some help.

Im trying to create a simple database for our local community football/soccer league. It's nothing fancy, just simple information to keep things tidy and organised.

The main features include Keeping a track of all results and outputting an up-to-date league standings, so it can be printed and available for everyone to see.

Few details: in soccer, there are 3 possibile outcomes of a match (win, draw, lose). Each win earns a team 3 points, draw 1, lose 0. Of course, the standings table will be sorted by the amount of total points each team has uptodate (descending order). Oh, and the goals scored - goals conceded should also be summed up for each team and displayed.

In theory, it sounded easy to me, but when i actually started doing it, i got stuck right at the beginning... So, here's what i got so far:
tblResults table that collects the following information: Date, TeamAName, TeamBName, TeamAGoals, TeamBGoals (the last two collect how many goals team a and b scored)

...well, thats pretty much it... lol :o

I've been experimenting with queries for a while but feel without some help i wont get it sorted...
Would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction... :)

Great stuff! Definitely a good start to what i intended to do...
Im gonna go through this example piece by piece and modify whats needed to suit my needs. However, one thing that struck me at the first glance is that the report diplayed the results only. Of course, its a great bonus (im sure the lads are gonna love it), but there seems to be no report for the league standings...
Once i familirize myself with this example, im gonna try to do it myself, at least try, and will get back to you shortly...

Again, thanx a lot!

Welcome to the wonderful world of league stats (notice my user name). Be prepared, every error will be your fault (we didn't lose 4-3 last match, we won - even though the phone message said they lost).
There are essentialy two methods of stats keeping. The first places a new record into the table for each match. The second (my preference) keeps running totals of stats by team for the whole season.
If you want the latter approach, you'll need some experience in VBA.

Hi again Karpaty,

Statsman has a good point - there are different ways of doing this. The example file that I posted is just one way. I prefer to record only the amount of detail that you need to and then use queries to produce the stats. This is on the grounds that why store data that doesn't need storing. The choice of course is yours.

I have attached and amended databse that now gives league a league table.

Hope this keeps the boys happy :-)

If you would like to send me a Personal Message with your email, I can send you a sample of the "running total" method.

Glad to be of help Karpaty. I am sure you can enhance the example I did for you enough to be able to claim it is your work!! :-)
