Okay feeling very sorry for myself today. :(:(

I have a horrible cold as does my daughter. I have tried my usual remedies, hot honey and lemon drink and various tablets. I was wondering while wallowing in self pity if anyone had any good remedies for a cold.

I always find a hot toddy with whisky and honey works wonders. After several I no longer care if I have a cold:D

My dad use to give me that what I was younger and it would always send me to sleep when I had a cold but unfortunately I don't have any whiskey in the house..... I have some red wine but I don’t imagine that would do the trick.

I may have to stop at the shop on the way home from collecting my son from school ;)

No remedy for the cold... but... might make you feel better...

Atleast you are NOT DEAD (check my Sig), stop complaining and get on with LIFE

Namliam I was very sorry to hear about you loss and I meant no disrespect in this post. I know how hard it can be to lose someone close to you and how this can be so much harder when they are young. I was merely thought it would be interesting to see what different remedies people had to alleviate the symptoms of a cold (and yes I do know there is no cure).

I didnt feel offended or anything... But I couldnt resist either....

I hope you feel a little better about being sick now ;)

Your cold is nowhere as bad a the colds men suffer with.

As my father used to say 'work it off'

My wife suffers with MS - she is in a wheelchair and yet never complains. She does what she can and is always cheery.

She would love it if all she had to worry about was a poxy cold that'll last about 2 days.

Actually, this is quite true. When you're busy with somthing (especially with somthing that interests you) you forget how lousy you feel....til the next sneeze.

Sorry to hear that. It’s hard helping someone through a long illness, I know, I hope you have more goods days than bad.
As I said earlier I do understand that there are many people worst off than me with my cold. I just thought it would be fun to see what cures people would come up with, one I have been advised already is warm mud on my chest but have to admit I won’t be trying that.
I probably should have started this thread differently and explained more where I thought it may head, although from past experience they rarely stay on theme anyway!!!

Burdock root tea is supposed to be a preventative for colds, I dont know if it will help if already you have one.

Sassafras root tea is a traditional native cold cure but the Canadian and American governments have banned the sale of this traditional medicine because it causes liver damage and cancers in lab rats if you constantly overdose them on the concentrated extract. Banning it doesnt make sense coming from a government which profits from the sale of liquor and tobacco, each will cause liver and cancer, but then I guess it all comes down to money and putting a price on your health.

vitamin c - at least 1500mg/day for adults.

Much better as a prevention than a cure, but make sure you don't over do it because it can cause bowel problems.

Sorry you're feeling lousy. There isn't much I can add here that hasn't already been said. In the past, I've tried Tylenol Allergy and Sinus which seems to work OK for me, and also inhaling steam or doing nasal rinses to get rid of all the junk in there. I've had hot toddys before too.

Hope you get to feeling better. :)

Seconded (being a Scotsman myself) :p my recipe:

1 measures* of Whisky^
2-3 measures* of Ginger wine (Stone's of course)
Good squirt of lemon juice
Teaspoonful of sugar (or honey)
Add an equal measure of boiling hot water to the mixture

Lovely :D

*A Scottish measure of course - none of this millimeter (or even gill) nonsense - a good large fingers worth ;)

^ Oh and why does Google spell checker insist that Whisky is spelt as Whiskey (not to open a can of worms but arg) oh and btw it thinks spelt is not a word  it's the past participial of spell for **** sake. Oh hang on Google is an Amer.......... :p

I have a throat infection, and it just hit me out of nowhere. I'm on two different antibiotics at the moment, but the doctors don't know what kind of infection it is. Hopefully it will pass soon.

I'll have to try the whiskey remedy.

I find Crabbies Ginger wine is also very good with whisky even if you don't have a cold.

The perfect cure for throat infections. Take a small bottle of white wine, you know the one portion ones you get with the screw tops. Add to this two or three decent size cloves of garlic and allow it to sit over night. Take a tablespoon of the mixture two to three times a day, I've never had to take it more than once to be honest and I get tonsilitis way too often to mention. The good thing is that this mixture will keep in the fridge for years, just getting better and better. You might want to eat a portion of parsley after it though, get rid of the smell of garling. It tastes every bit as aweful as it sounds, but boy does it work!

Get well soon.

Before I could even consider doing this, I think it migrated to my sinuses, this is one serious infection.
