I would like to play a looping track behind my mdb whenever opened.

Believe me, i have a good reason for it.

Regards

You can play a sound using the playsound function of the Windows API. Here is a site that shows you how to use it:

There are many other places you could find instructions if you want. Looping should not be a problem.

Good luck

Hi ByteMyzer,

Okay, I'll bite. What is the reason for it?

Just felt a need to flavor my mdb with a background electronic sound, to mimic the "fictitious" databases i have seem so far in some movies like, The Matrix, Resident Evil etc.

So, am trying to locate the best wav file suitable for this purpose. Don't know which one yet.

http://www.wavplanet.com/

Stay well.

That doesn't sound like such a good reason. Is this an application that others beside yourself will have to use?

YES, the application will be meant for others, too. But as said earlier, am just trying to see what happens.

Or should the sound only play during the idle state of the database, maybe with some custom animation? Then the user will only need to close the anim form (esc) to access mdb tools. Fantastic imagination??

Am sure this kind of thing already exists.

I don't know. My expectation would be for the users to turn up at the door with torches and pitchforks.

Unsolicited sounds and animations are (not absolutely always, but) usually a bad idea - if the user wants a screensaver that makes noises, they can choose to install one, if they don't want one, they're going to hate you for imposing it.

Just my opinion though.

Haha !

Obviously, option buttons would take care of that "phobia". So the user will choose to turn on or off the back "cyber" sound before the db goes to slumber.

I can just imagine this in an open plan environment. Many users using the system all of which are at a different point in the track.. total pandemonium. What happens when the phone rings or a customer walks into the office. After a while it gets a bit background music "Heard but never listened to.."

OK... let us know how well received it is (assuming you survive to tell the tale) ;)

One more thing: You probably should only do this if you already have the application doing every single thing it's supposed to do, and reliably.
If you're being paid for your time on this, I would not like to be in your shoes if it looks like you spent time adding bells and whistles to an application that is unreliable or incomplete. In fact, I'd be looking anxiously at the rest of my to-do list as well.

Out of interest, what is the database, what does it do and who will use it?

Mmm !

Almost complete with the whole database, for the Law Enforcement (Zambia Police). They wanted it called "Wanted Persons Database", but i proposed "Nominal Database", because i realised they would include into it records/cases of missing persons, unidentified dead bodies as well.

How about that, dear colleague?

I think adding noises and animations to such a thing would not be well-received here in the UK - as I understand it, people are generally quite scathing about the way computers behave in movies and TV, and how divergent that is from reality, and from being useful.
Here, an application including visual and audible embellishment is likely to be considered a toy, or just not a proper program.

However, you (hopefully) know your target market better than I possibly could, so maybe all my reservations about this idea are unfounded.

Let us know how it turns out. I am genuinely interested to hear about the user perceptions of your application.

Good time Gurman,

What do people mean when they say "dream come true" ?

Anyway, for me high tech movies are a dream, and most of the 'constructive' talent i admire and wish would be real...mostly for Law enforcement operations.

Well, I don't think they're generally talking about computer programs that constantly make beepy sounds, but that is only my opinion - which is why I really am genuinely interested to know how it works out in your case.

In my experience, anyone doing any job nearly always objects quite strenuously to the way their profession is portrayed in fictional works for the screen.
Computers as seen in movies just would not be practically usable in real life (again, in my opinion), for any number of reasons, including large, bright text on dark backgrounds, whirling animations and constant chirping and beeping.

If I had to use a computer system that behaved anything like the ones on CSI, it would make me unprodiuctive -either just because of all the distractions, or because I would deliberately smash the thing to make it shut up.

Aha...! Mike, how old are you today? That's only a by-way Q.

How do you see the future of high tech computer industry, say in about 30, 50, 100, 100 years to come? Talking computers, organic ... Is it avaidable or simply adaptable?
