any optimization suggestions?

Latitude E6500 C2D P9600 chip, 4 Gigs Ram, 180G HD half empty. . . Win XP, Office 2003,

a query linking 10 tables will take over ten minutes to return 500 rows. . .

the tables are not small, but the query is not that complex, and its properly keyed.

any software setting suggestions?

thanks

What service packs have you installed for Office 2003?

What is the size of your swap file?

What else is running? (In particular, any anti-virals?)

Have you done a virus scan on the laptop lately?

Usually this isn't QUITE as much of an issue, but is the drive relatively well defragged?

Normally, for WinXP even on a laptop, they don't limit your maximum virtual memory size that badly, and the maximum working set size is usually adequate.

How many embedded graphics are involved on the DB, if any?

How many Memo fields are involved, if any?

How many functions involving external references are in the queries, if any? If >0, how many external references are you using?

what if you just open a really simple query

is that quick?

if it is it's likely to be your 10 table query.

By the way - color tags here use an = sign and not the : like Utter Access.

is the data on the pc, or on a network?

has this performed ok previously on another pc?

And I repeat:

What service packs have you installed for Office 2003?

All SPs are up to date. . . data on the laptop (servers are always too slow)
sorry about the tags and I don't post on Utter Access. . ..

BUT users have identified an overheating issue with the E6500 video card which brings the laptop to a crawl, especially when using an external monitor at high resolution, which i do.

so at the moment, i am looking in a temp cooling issue. . .

thanks
