I have 2003 installed on my computer but want to view 2007 files.

I've downloaded the 2007 runtime file but I am struggling to think how to open accdb files (which are currently saved on the desktop).

Is this possible?

Thanks

You say you downloaded the files... did you double-click and install? Once installed you should have no problem opening but beware, Access remembers the last version opened so be careful switching back and forth.

When you install the A2007 runtime it will register itself as the default program to open .accdb files. So, double-clicking on an .accdb will open the app with the runtime engine. The runtime engine only "runs" the database. It will not allow you to go into design view on anything or get to the navigation pane. So, if you were to try to open a BE which typically has only tables and no forms, all you would get is a blank screen.

Hello,

It says "unrecognised format" when I try to open the file.

Also, my OP is XP. Does that make a difference?

Thanks

That message indicates you are trying to open a 2007 format in Access 2003. It also suggests you may not have installed the Runtime. Do you see it under Installed Programs in Control Panel?

I said in my first message I have Access 2003 installed, not 2007. I thought that didn't matter but obviously it does.

Any trusted sources for downloading the full version of 2007?

You also said you downloaded the Access 2007 Runtime which the database will run in as long as it is loaded. To do that you would need to double-click the file you downloaded.

scubadiver007: Are you attempting to open the .accdb in Access 2003 or are you double clicking on the .accdb file? You will not be able to open the .accdb in Access 2003, but if the Access 2007 installed correctly, you should be able to open the .accdb file by double-clicking on it or right-click and open (or maybe better open with).

Access isn't freeware. You need to buy it, either packaged from a retailer or as a download from MS. However, A2007 is over 6 years old and it is no longer officially for sale so you would need to purchase A2013 which is the current version. I don't know if you can still buy A2007 from a third party but why spend that much money on old technology?

Access 2007 runtime has been installed correctly because it is in the "add or remove programs" list but double clicking on the database file gives the error.

BTW, this isn't too much of a big deal. I just wanted to provide some screenshots.

Though if I download 2013, I can still open .accdb files?
