However, when I try to get checkmarks to display on my report for items that are checked it shows (depending on the settings) 0/-1, yes/no, true/false, on/off. My question is simple but the answer may not be, how do I get checkmarks on the report instead of the other results?

Your original problem was simply that you were using a textbox control instead of a checkbox control. If you change it to a checkbox control it works. @arnelgp solution, however, is better because you are very limited on formatting of the checkbox control and can only make it so big.
