A Lesson in Irony.

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

... and if the guberments does nothing you would be complaining how there are all these desperate people whom they refuse to help :banghead:

You are quite right! As the saying goes, Damn if you do, damn if you don't. Watch that "guberments", you will have Brian all over you!!! ;)

How to mislead people using a strawman:
1) articulate a proposition that you want to refute
2) present a second superficially simillar proposition and refute that instead

Are you speaking to me?

Are you speaking to me?

I do believe he is.

I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest that you favourite character in the Wizard of Oz was the Straw Man, as that's the only reason I can see for you wheeling him out at every opportunity :p

John,
I am lost. Where are you coming from. What straw man am I using on this post. BTW I have never seen Wizard of OZ from beginning to end. I found it silly. Now don't mis-quote me I am not saying it's silly. I know a lot of good people that like it, I just didn't like it.
I am also assuming that this is the way "favourite" is spelled down under, is that correct? My spell checker is questioning it.

The straw man you are currently using is;

The Government does not want us to feed animals in the wild as that will make them dependant on hand out.

Therefore we should not give hand outs to poor people as it will make them dependant on hand out and they will therefore have no incentive to find proper work.

Ok, now I get it. My fault all the way. I should have posted that under humor. I certaily understand how you would come up with that conclusion. I thought it was funny. While I do feel that there are some people abusing the system, in no way do I think that we should not help some.

BTW, I have no intention of debating that area of government help of people either pro or con. If I did I would hope I would deal with facts. Then, of course, it comes down to what facts we want to believe. I love the quote, by I think Will Rogers, but down quote me on that (pun intended) There are lies, damn lies, and statistic.

Que?

Then why start the thread in the first place

There is absolutely no irony in asking people not to feed wild animals so as not to habituate them to human contact, whilst at the same time feeding the poor and huddled masses.

I am sorry John, I just thought it was funny.

Come to think of it I might debate you about feed animals. What better way to get them into gun range. :D

Ah, the American sense of humour ;)

Sorry my bad, missed that.

John,
I can’t let the rest of the Yanks take the rap for my sense of humor. They are not all as weird as I am.
Shortly after we talked about feeding animals, I threw some food out the back door. No, I don’t shoot them. I like putting the flood light on late at night and seeing possums, fox and raccoons out there. Talk about coincidences, as I stepped out the door 6 shots rang out down near the next house down (about 700 feet away. Then people want to know why I keep guns.

John,
I was just reading some obituaries from my home city. I always get a kick, when they say beloved wife of, or beloved husband of. They never say wife cheating bastard of. Some that I knew personally hated each other. Is it that way down under?

There are many ways that humans are treated differently to animals.

For instance, if there are too many animals for an ecosystem to support we, the humans, take steps to control the numbers.

I don't remember seeing homes destroyed and turned into extra grazing, well not for many years anyway. Highland Clearances and cattle ranches being the examples that come to mind.

How true, makes you think tho. :D

How is this for Irony?

The same US adminsitration that intentionally supplied assault weapons to gangsters in Mexico now wants to take them away from its own citizens.

Or try this one:

AR-15 = Assault weapon.

Ruger Ranch Rifle = Varmint gun.

Both shoot the same ammunition, only one looks scary.

You know that supplying the guns to Mexico was a crime, right? And you know that the administration sells fighter jets to Saudi, and not to it's own citizens, the fact being that some weapons are dangerous enough they should only be handled by a trained military. And you know the varmint gun doesn't take high-capacity magazines, nor does it have a full-auto setting, right? And what was ironic?
