I am currently working on an application for a friend. I am developing this application in 2003. However, they are running 2010.

So far we have tried just sending my application directly over and running in 2010, but when information is being read into the database issues begin to appear with text file parsing (a majority of this app is written in VBA with the front end being a typical form).

My first question, is it typical that access is not backwards compatible? Does this seem normal that access 2010 would not operate correctly with an application developed in 2003?

I have begun looking into utilizing access 2003 runtime. Within MSDN, it shows a download area for 2007 but I have been unable to find 2003 runtime developer extensions? Do these still exist?

Appreciate any help/guidance.

if your friend installs A2003 (say from your copy) but doesnt license it - it will expire and then still work as run time

later versions should be compatible with A2003 (A2007 certainly was) - and in any event will surely offer the facility to convert A2003 dbs to A2010 anyway.

So could you help me out with the steps on how to do this? Where do I download the development extensions to build this?

Thanks...

The 2003 runtime is not free, it comes with the developer extensions package which is not free and I doubt you can still buy it new from Microsoft since it is so old. The access 2007 and newer runtime downloads are free. Your friend should be able to convert your database to the Access 2010 file format.
