Access 2003

I am using access 2003. When attempting to use the wizard to create a new query or report, having identified the table/ query, the fields of the said table/query do not display. I am obviously missing a component file. Can anyone advise me?

Is the table a linked table? Is the current link actively working?

If the program cannot "see" the linked table the fields will not display in the query wizard.
