I'm using access 2007. I set up an admin and user password for the particular database. But now I noticed that this password information applys to all other access database as well - in other words, I have to type the user name and password in order to enter any access file that previously exists. Why did this happen? How can I solve this? Thanks very much in advance.

When you add security to your Access database, the security settings are saved by default to a file called system.mdw. This normally resides in the Windows folder. If you save the settings to system.mdw, the security will apply to all of your Access databases on that computer.

What you want to do is to save your security settings to a new .mdw file which you save in the same folder as the database it applies to. Include the mdw file in path on your shortcut.

For an excellent overview of Access security, go to:

download the first file – Security Paper by Jack Macdonald. It’s a little long but it tells you everything you need to know.
