I have had a couple of indicators.
Apart from the seemingly random behaviour of various forms, I discovered that the accdb file I had used a couple of days ago was unreadable yesterday.
I went to my backup files and the directory was unreadable.
Many years as a service technician tells me that multiple faults are generally caused by a single failure.
I ran chkdsk /f /r on the portable drive that holds all the access code etc and, after 15 hours all of the bad sectors have been isolated.
The backup directory is all good and the accdb file is once again readable.
It is reasonable to assume that the strange behaviour access was displaying was, in fact, caused by data landing on bad sectors in the drive.
I'll see what transpires over the next week or so.
For now I will mark this as solved.
