Recently Access has starting dropping records. It will drop all the records entered at one particular time. The data will be there and then the next time I look, the data is gone. It doesn't happen all the time and seems to be random. This has also happened in Excel. I have tried the following:

Ran virus scanner using McAfee, AVG and Norton - nothing found
Reloaded Office 2003 - problem seemed to be resolved but has since resurfaced

I do a database backup after every major update and keep a paper trail of data entry. I am the only person who has access to the database. It is not on a network or server.

Any ideas at all will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried importing your objects into a new blank database?

I have not tried importing to a new DB since the problem has happened in Excel as well but it's certainly something to try! Thank you for your suggestion.

is your excel sheet somehow linked to your access database, or is it happening independently?

Data loss within Access is rare. Things to consider:

Do you have some sort of relationship with "cascade delete" turned on and did the data loss occur when you were deleting something else? If so, you have a relations "backwards" somewhere.

Do you have any sort of automatic purging of old records going on, and could the code doing the purge get confused about what to purge?

Do the records you lose involve anything that is OLE-embedded? If so, check your DB for broken references to the program that supports the OLE objects.

Beyond that, I wouldn't know where to look.

Simple Software Solutions

This is a case of traceability and process elimination. As suggested make a completly new mdb on a totally seperate pc. Export the data to a none Access format, ie text files, comma delimited.

Move these files to the new pc and import them into the virgin mdb.

Do the same for your Excel spreadsheets.

Next compact and repair your front end and again copy this to the new pc.

create a further virgin mdb and import the objects into it.

Rebuild the links

Retry.

If it continues to happen then I suggest you have a problem with your mdb objects. Decompile your mdb and rebild it in sections until you have identified the source of the problem.

If you do not encounter any more problems then it will suggerst that the root of the problem is the other PC. It must have some sort of virus on it.

These suggestions are not tried and tested, just initial tests that I would do if I had the problem.
