I need to write a gradebook/report card application for a grade school. I have already built a pseudo app in excel, but here's the question.

I need to also print report cards for each student. Again, I built an excel workbook for this but it contains 40 copies of the same report card each referencing different cells in other workbooks for the grades.

As you might imagine, updates are killer.

As i am more skilled in access and perfer it's app building capabilites, Can access be used for a student gradebook, ie. like a spreadsheet?

Any ideas on how? my teachers need to be able to add grades for assignments to the grade book. This is done now by adding a columns as needed. all students per subject are listed on one worksheet.

which is better here, Access or Excel?

thanks for any design ideas.

Mike

Thanks a.sinatra, I had hoped access might be the way to go.

So how would you handle the entering of grades, would each Test, Homework, quiz etc grade be a new record for each student for each subject

how do you get access to display like a spreadsheet? Datasheet or viewing a table yes, but that displays the data top to bottom instead of side to side.

If i add mutiple fields for each students grades (like columns in excel) and a teacher runs out of room, i don't want him/her going into the design view of a table to add another field.

any ideas??

There's a good selection of templates for teachers on the Mirosoft web site. There are several grade book templates for Excel and one for Access.

Thanks dcx693

These are some good resources. Yet I still struggle with the concept of making a database form funcion like a spreadsheet worksheet.

This project is just in the development stages and does not need to be completed until mid summer 2004

Grade Book in Excel

Try this spreadsheet from the Microsoft site. All credit to them....

I hope you are saying that you are trying to get over trying to make a form function like a spreadsheet, since they are radically different in concept.

Grin - did you look at the posted date of the post you're replying to, guys, you're about 2.5 years late ;)

i think Access will be more efficient for you...

i can give you some book titles that will guide you easily to create what you want.
