The file is part of a students exam, so a bit urgent!

The file just will not open, either by double click or open in Access. Tried holding shift, not the problem, not hidden or anything, just that trying to open brings up the first warning box (we have very strict security on students computers!) but after that nothing, no sign of an error or anything having been loaded. Tried compress & repair and the microsoft tool for compressing JET files, that did give an error when it tried, just saying error compacting database.

I've tried importing the file into a new database using access, that gives no results, but importing tables into excel does!

Anyone anyideas short of paying for it to be done?

Have you tried re-booting your computer? What message is in "the first warning box"? What version of Access?

Or, have you tried hitting F11 after opening?

Thanks, tried F11, doesn't do anything. The warning is a security warning about using these dangerous database things, it's a system security warning the students get because we don't trust them.

Access 2003

When I imported the tables into Excel it allows me to load all the tables she has been working on.

I've tried importing the file into a new database using access, that gives no results...
What does "gives no results" mean? Does it give an error? Can you import anything? One table maybe? One form maybe?

when I try to load/open the file all I get is the blank access 'front page' there are no errors, and most items inthe menus are greyed out as there is no database loaded. It is a total lack of database. Setting up a new blank database and trying to import from the old one has no effect, I tell it to import and access just sits there as though it has not been told to do anything.

the data is there, it can be imported into excel, but this looses all of my students design work, queries, table structures etc.

It is these that she desperatly wanted back.

Thanks for your help!

a number of things to ponder... first of all have you tried opening on a different pc other than the one your using, consider your version of access mite be buggered its happened to me in the past and i've had to reinstall.

second of all is this a student piece of homework/course work/individual work? If so is thier possibilities of trying to get new copy/copies off of them b/c they must have backup files.

Have you check the DB's Read/Write permissions? Maybe you have a prankster who limited your Read/Write permissions to get this exact effect!! Right click on the .mdb file and click on the Security tab & have as look their....

alternately you could just post the db and let a few of us have a crack at it...

tried 5 machines, all other files open ok on them.

It's an exam piece, 10 hour exam on a file she has created.

have checked permissions, all ok, and copied it to hard disks and even tried a pen drive!

err, final one I can't do till it's too late as it is part of an exam that is live and we are not allowed to copy it outside of our systems...... until it's too late and the exam window is closed.

Once that happens I will as it is bugging the hell out of me, and her too needless to say.

Thanks anyway

Jamie

Did you do as RuralGuy suggested and just try importing bits of it?
Another thought Tools>Option>View and check 'show hidden objects' to make sure that they have not just been hidden, though I don't think that would stop you importing.
Also try Windows> Unhide to make sure it is not hidden.

Just stabs in the dark, but worth a try.
Can you open the code pane?

Peter

Thanks, imported the bits using excel, access wont do it at all, it isn't hid or anything...
