Hi, we have an acess db that is split (data/frontend) and it works fine on XP pc's but as soon as we load it on a W7 pc it slows down. When opening it can take 30 secs, only 5 secs on xp, the db's are on the sbs 2003 server in a shared folder, with a shortcut on the desktops for the frontend which is also on the sbs 2003 server.

We are in the process of upgrading the server etc, but it seems strange that they run at different speeds if on different OS's. Forms also take longer to load on W7 along with searches !!!

The db is quite old, can there be compatibility issues between the os's ?

Has anybody had/seen this problem in the past ?

We have stopped AV, Firewalls etc, changed network cables, changed switches, permissions, tcp/Ip settings...still no quicker on W7 pc's.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Regards
M

which version of access - maybe your PC is underpowered (memory wise) for running the version of windows/access

other than that, check the position regarding a persistent connection. if you have multiple users and no persistent connection, it may run slowly

eg, google persistent connection access, this was top reply

just noticed another point. you should not all be using the same network copy of access. each user should use their own dedicated copy of the front end. access will allow shared use, but much better not to do so. maybe actually using a network copy is the cause of the speed issue, irrespective of the observation about multiple users.

don't feel you need to upgrade the server just for access. access imposes a quite light load on a system

thanks Gemma (Dave) , points taken, the db is a bit old and designed In access 2003, mem/cpu is fine on the pc, it just seems w7 is having problems loading the db in a timely fashion when xp is fine.

The server upgrade is part of the IT plan, not just for this problem.
The db is designed to be shared by the developer, hereditary program and all that :-)

Each pc has access installed, they all just look at the same network copy of the db.

There is a glitch with a2002/a2003 and w7 that MS won't fix. Google

Update: for fix, try a later free runtime version
