ive looked searched for existing theads but none are idiot proof

id currently have an active table with dat in and another table where i place old records from the main table.

but im not sure how to go about making the append querie etc..
can any1 provide me with easy guide to append queries??

i want the records to be moved only when a new record is being written over the exisitng record in the 'plan' table, usually around the expiry date but sometimes before or after.
then the old recod is placed in 'planHistory' table

can anybody help or provide me with a simular thread i missed or even sample database??

In the past we have handled this by forcing them to use a different form to ADD new records. Once you do that you can control what happens. We usually use an unbound form (so we have even more control) and then when they press SAVE, we write the old record to history, then insert the new row into the table. Of course there is all sorts of verifications and such that go along with that.
