What is the best way to have Access assign and automatic work order number? I would like to start with 1000.

Create a table with 999 dummy records and make the key an autonumber...

Or have a search in the forum for creating your own key field.

How is the information being entered into this table? If it's through a userform, I always find it nice to use a unique identifier with a date and time stamp and a few digits of one of the fields in the record to assign my ids. This way, it's very unlikely you can have two of the same.

I am right now trying to acomplish this...... can you elaborate?

Just a FYI: You can use ADOX to set the seed: Allen has an example.

Can't remember if this also is editable in Table Design view also.

I know this method, but... he did ask for the easiest way... and just creating 999 dummy records is the sure fire, short cut easiest way I can think off.

Sorry; missed that part, apparently. :)
