guys,

I am blocking facebook and youtube on my home machine via the hosts file directive:
Code:
127.0.0.0 facebook.com

etc...
but my google chrome browser can still bring up the page if I access a cached copy of it, via the suggestion by the browser when the connection error message pops up. I cleared all data in the cache via the options, and I can still access it.

Am I missing something??

(I know there are better ways to do this, but this is my choice right now, for others in my household)

thanks!

You can't block those because they're hosted by Google. If you really wanted to stop them, you could block google.com or at least webcache.googleusercontent.com but you're now blocking everything else that may not be related to FB or YouTube.

Why the worry, though?

it's not a worry, Banana. It's a quick fix to others that live in my household that have a tendancy to request pages on youtube and facebook that are good targets for virus sources.

My brother is one culprit. He's already contracted 2 viruses in 6 shorts months, one from myspace.com and the other from facebook. It was on his little netbook, but he's 22 yrs. old, so what can you do, right?

are you saying that facebook.com is hosted by google?? I'm confused. Are you sure that's what you meant to say?? I didn't know google was a hosting provider...

By "they", I didn't mean Facebook, but rather the cached pages that Google took snapshot off the Facebook.

As for your brother, give him a iPad or Macbook. Problem solved.

I would, but I don't by things for other people, buddy. ;)

What would happen if I delete the dir that those cache'ed files are in?? by the way, what dir is that??? do you know off hand?

I use the Firefox add-in called Leechblock to block sites from my son. I can also allow him 15 minutes every 2 hours to be on those social sites, so he can take a break from homework, but still limit his wasted time online.

I also run the Leechblock support forum.

With LB you can type in every site to block, define what days to block them, or max minutes to spend on those sites, and you can link to a text file containing a list of sites to block.

Leechblock support: http://www.phpbbplanet.com/thebuzz/
Free registration. No cost to you.
