brackets appear around target bookmark text (1 Viewer)

I've never seen this before. but I've put hyperlinks at the top of a word document that point to bookmarks in my doc. however, the BMs appear with braces around them. see images. is this normal or do I have to change a setting?

In the ribbon there is a View option that lets you decide what you see of the internal markers. I believe that bookmark visibility is in that list of things you can control in word WYSIWYG mode. I'll be honest - I don't use the layout or other modes that often so cannot address what is visible in those oddball modes. And we can avoid discussions of outline mode, I think.
