Hello,

I am having a heck of a time getting a Dell laptop with a WIRED connection to connect to an Access 2007 database.

After foolishly connecting to this database wirelessly, I took the wise advice of members here to never connect an Access database using a wireless connection due to Access' fragility.

But now, even when this laptop is wired to the network, it takes a VERY long time to reach the database. And lately, it fails to connect due to a network failure.

The database is hosted on a Windows Vista Home Premium OS. Two other XP SP2 machines can see and connect to the database perfectly. But this laptop (also Vista HP) cannot see/connect to the database.

I'm totally stumped! I have no idea as I'm not really sure about Vista. I know that Home Premium has much better network access than Home Basic, but this type of simple connection shouldn't be so burdensome.

Has anyone else had this problem? If not, can anyone suggest a route to take ?

Thank you for your time!
Mike

Just punting a guess here but it sounds like a permissions issue. The database has to be in a shared folder - does the user on Dell laptop you are having issues with permissions to the shared folder.
I am not too up on Vista but it sounds a possible scenario. There may also be some issues with number of connections using Vista Home - sounds more like a scenario where if I couldn't get the network onto a proper server system I would want to see Vista Business.
Hope this helps - not altogether sure if it will, but nobody else seems to be giving thoughts

Thanks for your reply, Malcy.

I had a look and the folder that houses the database IS shared. It's strange because all the other XP computers don't have any issues with it at all. It's very odd. If you come up with any other ideas, I'm all ears.

Thanks,
M

This is a total shot in the dark, but given that it was once connected via wireless, is it still connecting that way by default, even though it's hooked in by wire? I'd make sure the wireless connection is disconnected. I'm not sure how it works internally, but I know my laptop automatically connects to my home network when I turn it on.

Hey Pbaldy.

I thought of that and purposely disabled the wireless adapter. The only possible network connectivity option is through the LAN connection. Any other ideas?

You're way ahead of me then (which sadly isn't that hard). Can't think of anything else offhand, but I'll ponder it. I've been avoiding buying Vista machines for work. I only have one PC with Vista (Business) and it runs networked Access programs fine. I just got a Dell laptop with Vista HP on it, but I haven't tried to run a networked Access application on it.
