Yeah, that's one quirk of report. I think someone at Mircosoft wrote up acViewNormal on a friday morning without coffee.

This form or report is already being designed as a subform or subreport. To open this form in Design view, select the subform or subreport and click Subform in New Window on the View menu.

Did you say this was a subreport? If you had report open, you can't shift subreport to design view.

Therefore, you need to start with the report (with all of subreports) closed, open the subreport in design view, modify the recordsource, close it, then open the report in preview.

Did that make sense?
