I have a table with a field name "distcode." I need to change it simply to all caps; DISTCODE. In Design Mode I type DISTCODE, save, and when I view the table the field name is all caps. But when I close the database and reopen the table the field name is back to all small letters. What is forcing this default change?

The Data Type is Text, and this table is not linked to another table.

Thx, William

Try actually changing the spelling of the object and then change it back , so go from distcode to distcode1 to DISTCODE and see if the change sticks.
In some cases Access doesn't distinguish Caps from lower case.

Thx. I discovered that the field name was being controlled by the Name & Caption function, found on the Fields Ribbon which appears once the table is opened. The field name will default to the name in this control unless the name of the field is changed in Data view. Changing the name in Data view deletes what is in the Name & Caption control.
