change column format in Excel spreadsheet

I am importing various excel spreadsheets using the transferspreadsheet method. In cases where the format of an excel column is set to Accounting AND the value of a cell = 0 then it is importing as "$ -" rather than $0.00 which is causing me problems.

In VBA, how can I check the formatting of each column in the spreadsheet and then change it if it is set to accounting?
