Google Chrome has suddenly—without warning—stopped me from downloading ZIP files from the internet. These are my own files! Some are ones I’ve uploaded and shared on Access World Forums (AWF), others are hosted on my digital download provider’s site, and Chrome blocks them all.

So what now—do I have to convert every uploaded ZIP into ACCDB files? And what about my customers? Will they be blocked from downloading ZIPs from my provider too? Why wasn’t I informed? Why did this just happen out of the blue?

I’d love to blast Google with a megaphone over this, but let’s be honest—you can complain, they just don’t listen.

From what I’ve read online, the only “solution” is to disable Chrome’s protection entirely. But that doesn’t just affect downloads—it turns off protection for everything. What on earth are they playing at?

Looks like it might be time to give Microsoft Edge a try.

Can you be a little more specific as to how it "stopped" you? When you clicked what, at what point, what was the message? There must be some reason, I'm curious, but it's hard to research without specifics...
I just tried and was able to download a zip file using Chrome.

The trick with most of these download problems in the past has been that the site from which you generally do the download is in the wrong "family" of sites. You have four.

From Win10, you have to click the lower-left window icon, then the gear (for "Settings"). From there, you COULD just type "CONTROL PANEL" in the search box. From there, you want "Network and Internet" - and from THERE, you want "Internet Options."

On the tabbed control that comes up, select "Security." That allows you, with further gyrations, to see the settings for the four zones - which are Internet, local Intranet, Trusted, or Restricted.

Then it is a matter of getting your site to become "trusted." Unfortunately, I don't have Chrome so can't take it that last part. But if you can figure out how to apply one of those four categories to your site, you might clean up that download problem.

@The_Doc_Man your post only applies to I.E., though, right?
Or I should probably say, certain aspects of Internet Settings [generally meaning I.E.], will also apply to general browser behavior (Chrome, FF, etc)
But many if not most Internet Settings (notice that even in Win 10, Internet Settings actually just take you to the Internet Explorer options!)....are directly connected to I.E. specifically/only.

But many are browser-specific. To me Chrome is its own world :) But knowing the specifics of what is happening would be key. As an example, if UG reported that there was a Chrome-specific colored icon contained within the right-most portion of the address bar (waiting to be clicked on and decisioned), that would be very pertinent, and would probably point to a Chrome Settings-specific solution.
I've attached a screenshot of what I mean--this is just one of the many things Chrome notifies by icons in its address bar (and I'm not sure one of these icons is what UG is getting - that's why I probed for more information as to the how is it stopping you question).

not sure if it is relevant but on the recommendation of a friend who does a lot of internet stuff, I've just started looking at using duckduckgo - see this link (not my friend)

and this one

I've only been using it for a few days, but seems to be OK

I also tend to use opera and firefox as a browser, but have chrome, edge etc

Actually, that behavior of switching it off then when you came back is reminiscent of what happens with certain A/V utilities when they say "You need to update NOW." They lock the behavior until the update. By any chance do you have an anti-viral package that is allowed to do automated downloads but not automated updates?

Well Paul, I was on:- Version:-
83.0.4103.116 (Official Build) (64-bit)

But when I went to the about Google Chrome page, it informed me that it needed to update, and proceeded to update! So now I've got this version:-
84.0.4147.89 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Only just updated right now, so I'll let you know if there are any issues...
Same as me then, just the 64 bit version. :)

One thing I have noticed now that there is a delay when typing in here. Will need to see if that happens on other sites.

I used to use that on my mobile Chris, I stop using it for some reason, I can't remember why, but there was something it did I didn't like.
I thought that was just a search engine?

@Uncle Gizmo
Tony, could you do me a favour please.?
Can you see if your typing is being buffered on websites.

Mine is slow as hell and I have just reported it to Chrome as it happens on other sites, even the bloody post to Google.

God it's slow!

For the record, ALL typing to ALL websites is being buffered. First, inside your computer. Second, by EVERY HOP along the route from your computer to your website because the Internet is based on a "store and forward" concept. Third, by the web site's host's operating system. If you have a sluggish hop anywhere along the route, you will get sluggish response.

@The_Doc_Man
So why does it not happen with Pale Blue which I am using now on this line
Yet this line is with Chrome and is being delayed.?

Is "Pale Blue" a browser that takes the place of Chrome?

The other possibility is that Chrome is logging something that Pale Blue does not.

Pale Moon is just one of the browsers on my laptop. Sorry, I typed in Pale Blue for some reason.
I used it as a test to see if the problem was the laptop or the browser.

Before the Chrome Update to help Tony, I do not believe the delay was happening.?
So I am using PM here as otherwise any typing takes ages, even with my poor typing skills. :)

TBH Tony, I am not that great a typist, I have to look at the keyboard. Even moving the cursor left and right shows a delay.
I'll use Pale Moon on here and other sites where I need to key in, until Google fix it. I've only noticed this since that update and I have let Google know about it.
I would attempt a downgrade but that affects profiles, so I will leave well alone. Pale Moon works fine.
