code to overwrite query

Just to make sure you didnt miss my previous post with the zipfile...

You didnt I hope?? I sure hope it helps you a lot...

Hmz, I send it to a Vista compacted folder, which should be "normal zip"

Try this (zipped) attachement

That worked

I like it but 2 things.

1) I would have to do that to all 32 fields. And for space I would have to do it in a seperate form.

2) Use of wildcards. He is going to want to search, filter, for like "*b*" or > or < or between and etc.

unrelated if there is a "#" symbol in the fields how do you use a wildcard to find like "*#4*"?

PERHAPS this filter selection would be better placed in the HEADER of the mainform, not in the subform.

ie put a cbobox with
steak, berry, egg in the main form header (populate this with all the available options that might show in the subform, make it multi select - then you can pick one ingredient, or several) - thats the way i would do it.

That is what namliam is suggesting as well.

I'm not great or good with code.

His sample db makes it look simple. and If I had only one field then..

I'm stuggling here with getting paid and eating or spending another 2 weeks doing right but doint it over, again.

You can do like or what ever you like...

A popup form I think would indeed be the way to go... but like I said it is a REAL quick REAL small REAL simple sample. to give you an idea of how you could do it.

If he is "more or less DB savy" you could also make a textbox where he can enter his own stuff. Just have your code add the filter to the form in a proper way and you (he) is good to go....

Getting paid?? You mean you are doing this freelance or something??

By the way namliam...

My wife is a Belgian. We where at one time thinking of moving there. What is the job market there, at least in the Netherlands, for entry level IT guys?

Entry level I dont know for sure... I do know that for guys with some decent coding/db skills there are jobs for the picking...

I changed jobs twice over the last 2 years, tho my skills definatly go beyond entry level and Access...
I also do some Project Management and do pre-studies to databases as well as Oracle and SQL server database projects/ Datawarehouses.

Belgium and Netherlands tho, that is like comparing NY to Las Vegas I think... A world of difference :)

But you didnt answer my question.... Are you doing this freelance???

Yes I am.

Why you need a need someone to build you a good db?LOL:D

No, LOL, I can build it just fine myself thanks...

But... how come you are doing this freelance with obviously so little experience?? I mean I tried going freelance a while back...but no go...

Is the US market that good?

And... uhm... if you have more work... maybe I could help on a more .... "permanent" basis ;)

Maybe I misunderstood "Freelance".

I met this company and sold him a bill of ideas. He took me up ion it and paid me. I've done maybe a dozen and 5 of them I got paid.

This is not my fulltime or part-time job.

Something to offset our cost of living and I don't have to claim it.

Gee, I am full of ideas, just no body buying them... Not a great salesmen I am :( Yet you pulled it off :) good for you...

Freelance = Not a fixed job, but doing it anyway and getting payed for it.
A lot (like up to 70-80 euro/hour) or little (100 euro/database) depending on the work... but still getting paid :)

I've gotten half and need to present final product for the second half.

It always seems like enough when you make the deal...

In anycase I think I'm going with it the way it is.

The query he is putting his criteria in is a multiple join with many tables. He cannot edit the tables from the query cause it won't let him.

I got a reset button to fix anything he may have messed up.

And it works.

It might not be the best, it might not be snazzy but i think he may accept it.

Do you really see a huge problem. I think there may be a learning curve on his part but ...??

What do I need to search for Like "*#4*" where the # is an actual character?

The symbol is already in there I can't change them or eliminate them from the fields.

I wouldnt :(

but he is your customer not me :) I am know I am a bit of a perfectionist sometimes. The problem also arrises when you first open the form the old "searches" are still there and also, because your main form is displaying other info than the subforms he may not be able to do the search he requires.

IMHO a user should not have a learning curve, but rather should be able to start using every feature ASAP. Doing searches in a query window like you are doing now requires rather " advanced " skills which I normaly would not expect the user to have.

On another note, some searches may have undesired effects which your user will not be able to resolve without your "teaching" him. Thus he will come back to you... if you "pre-manufacture" it ... less so.... I think...

For special wildcards in Access you actually want to search on use [] around it...

"*[#]*"

should do it...

Thanks for your advice Liam,

However I'm pot committed. A Poker term.

I'm going to see what he says about and what he thinks.

Maybe he will pay me to change it. Or maybe my conscience will get the better of me and I'll fix it anyways. After I give it to him.

Because of my inexperience with code it would take at least 2 weeks I think to build it your way, the right way, and at least 20 questions to the forum.

But really thank you for your advice. I think it's great stuff.

I wish I got the same advice 3 weeks ago.

Really a BIG thank you.

LOL, so you are "ALL IN" ? Or what?

Happy to help Gunner, happy to help really.

Liam,

Hey just thought I'd give you a shout and let you know that he accepted it the way I had it.

If I had to do it over again for a one user I don't know if I would do it differently. I'll have to wait to see if any problems arise.

If there was going to be twenty hands in the db then absolutelty I would create a seperate form. In that form all the fields that he could filter. Then the code behind to convert what they type to be the criteria for query.

Again thanks for all your help.

Good for you ! Keep up the good work !
