Compact on open/close

I would like to compact my back end database when the front end either opens or closes (only one, not both), but so far have not been able to make this work without opening up the back-end.
Does anyone know how to do this?

There's an excellent (free) utility for compacting and repairing databases available from http://www.peterssoftware.com/cal.htm - it won't do exactly what you're asking, but perhaps you can use some of the same techniques.
