if the numbers are your own, cant you issue self-checking numbers then
eg with a 10 digit number, make the 10th digit dependent on the other 9 - normally you do some calculation like
digit 1 * 2 + digit 2 * 5 + digit 3 * 8 etc, and then keep take a modulus of the answer to end up with a single digit remainder, which becomes vthe 10th digit.
you lose some numbers (but you you have 100million of them), but it becomes harder to guess/enter a valid number by mistake.
look on internet for examples of modulus calcs (in UK the sales tax is called VAT - VAT modulus will find some examples)
