Hi, Big Jim here!

Was wondering if there is an easy way to take a link, copy it, and paste it into the Windows Startup folder so that the link will open along with Windows.

Tried FileCopy, and that doesn't seem to work with shortcuts.

Thanks!

Doug

Hi Chewy!

Thanks for the reply, but I forgot to mention that filesystemobject does not allow you to copy shortcuts either. Any other suggestions?

Thanks again!

Big Jim

P.s. Big Jim loves the SuperNintendoChalmers thing.

Did you try this yet? I tested it myself and worked fine

Hi Chewy,

Yes, I ran it first before I posted my last message. I get the same "File Not Found" message that I always get. Are you trying to copy a link?

I am able to copy files out of the given directory but not links.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Big Jim

Do you already have a link created or are you trying to make one from Access? I just tried fCopyFile "C:\Documents and Settings\MATMAJ\Desktop\Shortcut.lnk", "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Database.lnk"

I would check your path again. Could you post what you use?

FileCopy strDir & "Shortcut to RenewalCalendar.lnk", "gstrStartMenuPath & "Programs\StartUp\Shortcut to RenewalCalendar.lnk

The directory structures work because I have been able to replace "Shortcut to RenewalCalendar" with a text file in the same directory, and it copies fine. Were you able to copy a link from one location to another?

Thanks for all of your help.

Big Jim

gstrStartMenuPath = "C:\WinNT\Profiles\all users\Start Menu\"

Yes I was able to copy the link. Try just for testing sake type in the whole link to see if it works.

Ok Chewy, here is what I did. I ran both of these in the code you provided:

fCopyFile "R:\Audit_Shared\RC\Shortcut to RenewalCalendar.lnk", "C:\WinNT\Profiles\all users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Shortcut to RenewalCalendar.lnk"

fCopyFile "R:\Audit_Shared\RC\readme.txt", "C:\WinNT\Profiles\all users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\readme.txt"

The only difference being I ran once for the .lnk and once for the .txt. The .txt. worked and the .lnk did not.

Why does my computer hate copying the .lnk?

Thanks again,

Big Jim

Just to clarify...you already have the link created before opening Access?

Yes, good clarification. The link had been created. I copied the file and pasted as shortcut. It is that shortcut that I am trying to copy.

thanks!

Big Jim

The only thing I can think of is that you typed the wrong file name. Try this...Create a new linnk to the file but name it one one "test" without quotes. I think you have the file wrong is my only quess

Just thought of something. You are running NT right? NT does not like dragging files to the startup menu...maybe that has something to do with it...maybe

No such luck. I changed the name of the link to Test.txt, and it still told me file not found.

Can .exe run directly from the Startup folder? I could just create a tiny app there that runs my other executeable.

Thanks again,

Big Jim

Don't just change the name...create a whole new link

Still no success.

I created the link test and then tried test.txt.

File Not Found for both of them, but if I create a File named test.txt, it finds it and copies it.

I am using Windows NT, could this be something that has been fixed for Windows 2000?

Thanks,

Big Jim

I suppose you could try to put a .bat file in there and open the file. Other than that I cant help you. Sorry

Chewey, you have been a bigger help than you think, giving me many ideas.

I put a small .exe in the startup, and it worked great!

Thanks again!
