Still can't figure this out!!

I need to copy an Access 97 database onto disc to be sent to our sister company so they can use it!

Can copy onto disc but it copies as 'read-only', the database is shared and has security (which i have access to). The sister company needs an exact copy of the database and they need to be able to add records and change details within it.

How do a make a usable copy that is not 'read-only'?

Please somebody help!!!

You will also need to send the mdw (workgroup file) so they can open the db.

Also, are you copying it to CD?

If so then it will be saved as READ ONLY.

When copying back form CD they will need to untick the 'Read Only' option on the file's properties.

There have been many post lately about this. Just zip the file first then put it to the CD.

Think about it this way. You are copying to a CD-R correct? What does that tell you? That you can only write to it once therefore whatever you write to it has to be read only.

Now when the other facility gets the files have them install to their machine then right click on the file name and uncheck the read only attribute. Now they will be able to use the db as intended.

[Tried what you said but after ticking the 'read-only' box before opening the file it came up with a message "unable to set attributes".

I've a feeling this is something to do with the security which was set up previously on the database. i have the master access password so if you have any ideas let me know!!

Thnaks anyway

Did you copy it from the cd to a computer before trying to change the attribute?

Think it's sorted now!!

Thanks to those who gave me help and advise, you woke me up and it wasn't as difficult as i was making it out to be!

Never tried these forum things before, glad i did!

Cheers

Just my 2 cents for what it is worth (usually nothing), but I have found that if you don't close the session once the CD is created (there is ususally a Close Session after creating CD option box on most writter software) then you can transport the database to another computer and it will not be read-only.

At least it works on the software I have.

Good Luck

Yep jfgambit,
Using direct CD (or similar) would also achieve this as it basically treats it like another HDD.
Although be aware, as this method and 'not closing' it usually require that you are reading it on another CDRW drive at the other end too.
