Database compaction

I have set an application which I have stored on a local server. It is set to compact on closure. I have done this many times before without problems, but in this case compaction leaves a copy of the database on the server. Can anyone please advise me as to why this happens and what to do about it? Thanks in advance.

i think compact creates a (working) copy, which then replaces the original

so this may be failing part way through

try doing it manually - see what happens
