I am trying to open a database that has been run on a network and now keep getting this error message

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time"

And wont open the Database.

Any way round this or am i fighting a lost cause?

Can you get everyone to come out of the db and compact & repair it?

There is no one in it and ive taken a copy onto my local drive, but still the same problem. It wont let me open the database. Its a shame we have no Database recovery software.

Just start MS Access without actually opening your database. Then do the compact & repair stuff...

Sorry if this is getting annoying but have tried all that and i cant get past the error message.

Have you tried to do a new db and import all the objects over?

Appreciate the help but i still get the same message. Dont know if it makes a difference but the db has got a general password on it. It accepts the password and then shows the message.

Have you tried to hold the shift key down as it opens?

Again, tried that. I have no idea what they have done with it but its a complete mess.

Have you tried to link/attach to the tables?

Can you look at the directory where the database is held.
There may be another file called <DatabaseName>.ldb
First open this by sending it to notepad, it may tell you which machine it thinks has locked the DB.
Secondly, delete it.
Warning - I have done this a few times for major problems, but aside from freeing the lock I don't actually know what else it does... but it sounds like you are running out of ideas anyway.

I thank you all for your help but none of these are working. I think its time to conceed that whatever has been done to this db, has well and truly screwed it up and nothing much can be done without paying for some kind of Database recovery.

How much data is in it? How many tables?

Just the one table as im aware. As with the data i dont know but its size is 402k

Hum...

See if you can zip it up and post it...

if the data is not confidential you could zip it and post it for others to take a crack at for you.

Have no idea what data is in it or how it has been set up. I did not create it. It has been created by an access novice and ive been landed with the problem but here goes.

Pasword is central
