Database tripled in size?

Hello ... I have a membership database (about 2,000 individual members with about 20 fields in each) ... I have 3 fields which are "yes / no" fields in a table for all members. I changed the value in each of these fields (from no to yes) for all 2,000 members.

My database GREW in size from 4mb to 36mb. Is this normal? What has MS Access done? Can I fix this? No, changing the values back in each field does not shrink the database any.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

How many tables have you got?

and try compacting it.

I would try Compacting it (Tools menu) as Colin suggests. One thing I don't get, is why Access does this in the first place?

In big operations access 'claims' space to store temporary tables... and doesnt release it again :(

One of its 'lesser' qualities, compacting on close and/or using a Backend is the only way around it. (unfortunatly)

but it isnt a problem on a day to day basis

just something that needs tidying up from time to time, perhaps in the same way (and analogous to) defragmenting your hard disk

Wasn't this bugged in Office beta programs? Surely they can't put this down as "by design". Something to nag them about in Office 14.

It is if you a running DB over a network, and your manager refuses for it to be split in FE and BE :(

The manager has nothing to say about it, its MY database... I design it and I will determine what is right or wrong.

I am good at developing databases...

Just what is my manager good at?? If only he could tell me... One thing I am sure of, he took me on the job because of what I am good at, so let me do my thing .... and he can do his... what ever that may be.

SENSATIONAL ... The compact and repair option worked. Thank you all so much for your help.
