Deleting will then not accept formulas

If I type a formula =sheet2!a1 into a cell in sheet1 it will display the contents of cell a1 from sheet2. That's how it should be.

If I then go to the cell in sheet1 highlight the cell and press delete, then retype the same formula into it, it will not display the contents of cell a1 from sheet2. it shows =sheet2!a1.

Can you advise please?

Are you sure that you didn't hit the space bar before you stated typing.

But that would have stopped you putting the formula in in the first place.

You did not mention that you had changed the cell format.
