Thanks to Paul who drew my attention to the special new-line characters in Word, I have been able to make some progress. Access now accepts 25 records but then stops altogether. I've been studying the input but can't identify the problem.
Here is a portion of the file I'm trying to import into Access:

'William R Teece', 'Census, 1940', 'birth: 1885 Pennsylvania', 'residence: 1940 Wyanet, Wyanet Township, Bureau, Illinois', 'spouse: Nellie Teece', 'parents:', 'children: Ella Grace Teece, Kathleen Teece, Dean Teece'
'Nellie Teece', 'Census, 1940', 'birth: 1890 Illinois', 'residence: 1940 Wyanet, Wyanet Township, Bureau, Illinois', 'spouse: William R Teece', 'parents:', 'children: Ella Grace Teece, Kathleen Teece, Dean Teece'
'Ella Grace Teece', 'Census, 1940', 'birth: 1919 Illinois', 'residence: 1940 Wyanet, Wyanet Township, Bureau, Illinois', 'spouse:', 'parents: William R Teece, Nellie Teece', 'children:'
'Kathleen Teece', 'Census, 1940', 'birth: 1923 Illinois', 'residence: 1940 Wyanet, Wyanet Township, Bureau, Illinois', 'spouse:', 'parents: William R Teece, Nellie Teece', 'children:'

The first two records (William and Nellie) are processed correctly but the following ones starting with Ella are ignored, as are the hundreds remaining.
Any help will be appreciated.

Are you importing to an existing table, try checking the length of the different fields!
When you look at the two first records, there are no parents, which is in the third.

Hi Uncle Gizmo,
Many thanks for drawing my attention to that Google site - it looks most interesting.
Brian Teece

Hi JHB,
Thanks for your comments. I have looked again at the point you make but the fields seem OK. Although there is no name in the Parents field the title is there as a placeholder.

What is the length for the parent field in the table?
Try put in 'parents: William R Teece, Nellie Teece' in the two first records.

Hi JHB,
Thanks for that suggestion - I tried it but it didn't work.
Field length shouldn't be a problem since it's not a existing database.

What is it then, in post #1 you wrote "Here is a portion of the file I'm trying to import into Access:"?

Hi JHB,
The Access Import Wizard sets the field lengths according to the incoming data.

How about posting a copy of your input file?
Also, do you have any documentation/specification for the source data you have?

What is your plan for the data -once you get it into a table?

Hi jdraw,
The input file is 950+ lines long !! The source data is varied and consists of personal events such as births, deaths, marriages, censuses etc.
Once the data is in a table, relationships become more obvious and family trees can be grown.
Are you interested in genealogical research?
