Hi guys

Unfortunately i am under obligation to make my current database free of charge for a travel agency. What i was wondering though, was how much it would cost them if they went and paid for someone to do it?

How much do people/companies charge to make databases of different specs/difficulty? I'm making a DB system for the travel agency which will store all customers details, as well as details of all of their trips. The user will be able to search for any customer/trip info by any of the customer fields OR trip fields. The tables will be logically divided up/normalised.

What about if you're making a DB and then also incorporating some of their old muppet-style database tables?

And it will also look pretty shit hot, with switchboards and customised look and feel etc.

How much would you charge? I was thinking after this project i could put any knowledge i learn to good use?

Cheers

This same question has been asked about 3000 times.

There is NO answer to this....there are way too many dependencies. The following are just some of MANY dependencies:

Environment
Organization
Experience
Application Type
Orgainzational Infastructure
Management
Time
....

The list grows...if I gave you my rate it would not be the same as someone else's. Maybe I know VB, C++, and SQL, while you work with ASP, Perl and maybe some Java...technology makes a difference as well. Maybe you're quoting for GM (General Motors) or maybe you're quoting for Joe Blow's Florist (Big difference). So the answer is indeterminate its like dividing 0 by 0.

Actually, when I develop anything, the developments and its costs are just a smaller portion of what has to be accomplished. There are many phases that have to be accounted for within a systems development plan. It would be nice if one could just jump right in and develop mdbs for companies and charge a reasonable fee, but there is a lot (I mean A LOT) of additional work that goes into it.

If it’s something small for a small company, then you could do it. What do you charge? That depends on what you feel your time is worth in direct correlation to the level of your skill. Some people charge $45 per hr, some $175, and others are even higher.

What I have found a small demand for is Access applications. I KNOW YOU CANNOT CREATE AN EXE FOR ALL OF THOSE READY TO JUMP MY BUNS. :-D But there are small company’s or even divisions that love the flexibility and power offered by access for report generation (w/o having to by crystal reports), simple data crunchers, and even small mdbs to track day to day stuff while the larger corporate servers (DBs) handle the majority of the work. I have done a few independent ventures that were just like that, simple and sweet.
Also, don’t let support bite you in the arse. Account for every phase in the system development life cycle, so you don’t end up working 200+ hrs on a job you bid at a 75 hr pay.
If you love access (as most of us here do) then I would suggest looking into possibly working for a company/consulting firm that is doing this type of work. It would give you a better overview of what you could expect and what should be charged.

Access Sucks

mission2java_78, the ONLY think that sucks more is when Larry Ellison realizes that he is losing ground to Bill Gates and raises ORACLE pricing scales again.

Damn, don't you hate it when two guys with delusions of godhood start a price war - in the WRONG DIRECTION?

Mission hasn't actually posted on the forum for some time, he had a fit and got banned ;)

He can't help it if Java is slower than a snail in frozen dog shit.. :p

Kodo, That quote should go down in the hall of fame :p
And it's true....
