I have nothing against POTC.
But if you're using a country for a film, and getting the history wrong, do you mind?


See, Singapore wasn't an oriental island during the mid-1700s.
It wasn't even called Singapore, more of Singapura and some people called it "Temasek".

Singapura means(in Malay) Lion City.
Temasek means(in Javanese) "sea".

And Singapore is located in the Malay Archipelago.
How come Chinese pirates were there??
Suppose to be Indonesian pirates.
Get the history straight.

I'm not proud about it.
The Americans actually know where Singapore is.
But remember, Singapore wasn't a Chinese island back then.
Not until the Japanese Occupation.
A lot of immigrants from China came to Singapore to surive.
And that was during 1941.

I understand your point of view, but bear in mind that this is a fantasy comedy. Therefore, it has a certain right to deform reality. After all, walking deads don't exist and no one is going to blame them for adding some in it.

I would agree with you 100% if it was a drama, a movie of espionage or even worst a documentary. But here, I think that they didn't have to spend energy to make it that realistic.

By the way, I am not sure that there are many Americans (Nor British, nor Canadians) who can spot Singapore on a map. Despite it's culture, it's beauty, and all the great things that it has to offers, Singapore isn't a large country compare to china and it doesn't get as much media attention as China does. So, it is normal that we may make mistakes about it.

It is like Quebec, it is a french province in an english country. But many persons I chatted with believed I was from France spending some times in Canada. I understand that my little place on earth may not be well-known by residents from the other side of the globe. Just like I also understand when some people talk about Canada as if it was an American state. It is not, but the American culture is so much bigger that it overcast Canada's own culture, just like the chinese does with you.

Keep on talking about your country to let us know what it is and talk about its beauty, so that we can learn about yourself. But forgive us for not knowing it as well as you would like to... as well as it deserves to.

Well I'll take it that way, that:

Its just, I hope people get that Singapore is an island off coast of Malaysia.
Not part of China.
Foreigners thinks we don't speak english(we were force to take english as our first language cos the government said so, originally it was Malay).
Its so funny when they come up to a well-dressed office girl saying "Doo-yoou-speeaka-english??".

But eversince China's rise, now, we have to learn Mandarin, to "survive".
Why?
Now all the classified ads states "Bilingual"
Which means both english and mandarin.


The saddest part is, we always have to follow the current top leader just to survive(as a country). We, (not all Singaporeans) had to give up our first and original national language to (first) english then your mother tongue.
Believe me, here, there's no such thing as "freedom of speech" or listen what we (Singaporeans) have to say.
All we do is follow, so long the government gave us money, we have to follow.
But in the end, guess who rip off our money back?

I think, I'm gonna be interrogated after this.

I'm sorry things don't sound so happy in Singapore, it is several years since I passed through (3 days), and I found the people there the friendliest I'd met with a service second to none.

Well, I'm glad people have interest in a tiny country on the world map.
But all I can say is Singapore is tiny yet complex cosmopolitan city.
The government is as scandalous as the US or any other country. But people here are very discreet about politics here. Only conversations in the taxis or a coffee shop.

Well, Brian, I think for visiting Singapore 3 days isn't enough...
You need a week, and you've covered the entire map of singapore.

Just a little accuracy here though.

This week-end is the Quebec National Anniversary (Also called "La St-Jean" because it falls the same day as Saint John the Baptist's anniversary.) It is a very political celebration, where we show that we are pride of our nation and where our idea of separation gets a boost. We usualy speak French only on that day and we only listen to songs from Quebec. We wear white and blue (like our flag) and walk in the street and in parks with lots of flags. And we drink beer 'till we fall asleep, in front of a very huge camp fire.

As for the Canadian Anniversary, it is on july 1st. Although it is less celebrated in Quebec, we often put aside our convictions on that day when we hear and see the concerts and fireworks. That day is often used to move from a flat to another since everyone is off from work and that it is easier to all move on the same day.

Sounds great, the Quebec National Anniversary.
At least, the country is very proud of the national language and put aside everything and enjoy.

For us here in Singapore, we go the National Stadium(which going to be torn down at the end of the month) dressed in red or white(our national flag too) sing to all the multi-cultural songs, in malay, mandarin and tamil. There are still english song to be sung. But to celebrate the independence of Singapore from the Malaysia. Which is 9 August.

I think our celebration sounds alike, except for drinking.

Not really, I only went to the national stadium to celebrate once.
The show is live telecast on every channel in Singapore. So the people who are not into the celebration went out and watch the fireworks.
