I do wash most vegetables - snap peas, brocolli, brussels sprouts, spinach - it just brings them back to life a little - makes them look and smell a little fresher.
I wash hard fruits (apples, pears, etc) most of the time too - but not always.
When it comes to soft fruits - peaches, berries, nectarines, plums - and especially if I'm not going to eat them right way, I don't like to wash them. It makes them waterlogged and they lose their texture. Blueberries lose that beautiful satiny look. Wet strawberries turn into garbage. I suppose I could take the fruit and dry it - and I used to - but lately I've been taking the major risk of just eating them dry, out of the fridge (or my lunch bag).
What do you think?
Is washing of food necessary? Obvioulsy you want to remove any dirt or foreign substance off the surface - but beyond that - what is the risk? Is it mostly psychological fear of unspecified germs or bug doo-doo?
