Hi All,

I have recently been tasked to overhaul an inventory tracking spreadsheet which has not been updated for a while and does not currently reflect our new products and financial procedures.

The managers and production people have expressed interest in the following.

A daily form where the branch administrator would enter what ever went on in the new tracking sheet (db?) and it would spit out what transactions need be put into our financial system.

Reports which would mimic the current spreadsheet, however with the sheer amount of data on the spreadsheet it would need to draw from multiple tables and do several calculations based on the data being presented.

The ability to change any info relating to material cost or related branches. Easy to do in Access however tough to do in Excel if it was based on VBA or Macro coding.

Now the issue is I have just enough knowledge in both excel and access to get me in trouble. I am waivering on which program to use for this project therefore I am unsure of what avenue to proceed down; as I do not want to get half way done the project and realize there are limitations that won't allow me to proceed.

Therefore to summarize

Access -
+Great for maintenace and entry
- May have issues with formulas and the transactions reporting

Excel
+ Great for reporting
- Not Great for maintenance and entry, may have scaling issues with Macros (being able to pass on to other branches)

Is their any resources or advice you can pass on to help overcome the obstacles either way?

Thanks for your time and help!

The shortcomings you list for Access can be overcome by training. Access beats Excel hands-down for dynamic data entry. And the reporting should be comparable or better in Access (depending on the design and skill of the report writer).

access

virtually impossible with excel

besides anything else, if your business is anything but tiny, with excel you will run into the 64000 item (row) limit at some point.

among other things

Access calculates far far quicker than excels vlookups, hlookups and the like
Access makes sure you cannot put inappropriate data in a cell (effectively)
