Hi

I have created a db and am having serious problems, the size of the complete db is 3mb, and when split its 500k, the trouble I am having is that when putting the db on the network server and you try and open it based from home it takes so long for both the full db and the split.

The main db has one page that all staff need to see and have a quick response when opening on VPN client.
The form I want to open has a combo box that lets the employee select the company and all the information updates on the form.

I tried making a page in acces to do the same thing but having problems

Is this possible what I am trying to do or is there an easy faster option.

Thanks for your help

Search the forum on VPN.

Split your database, then take a copy of the front end database and paste on your desktop, open this Front end and delete all linked tables which are associated to your BE database on this copy.

Now to re-establish your connection with your BE tables, open your copied FE, by clicking “File” and then linking tables, When the Microsoft dialog box opens for selecting the BE database, in the “File name:” type the i.p root address
(example: \\192.198.0.5\mycompany\fileserver\Company DatabasesFolder\MyDatabase_be.mdb) and then ok. I’m presuming your server is on a static I.P address.

If the address is correct and you have an active connected VPN your Front end database will call its data from your server.

Linking your FE to your BE like this allows you to zip it and email to your colleges, All they need to do is un zip it and start work!

Something I have done, (read about it here) it made a huge improvement

Try turning off Name Auto-Correct
Tools - Options - General tab

Good luck

Thanks I will try splitting it may have a little problem doing this, trying to get my head round opening and deleting the files, is this easy enough to do, could I post the db to you to have a look
With thanks

Sure you can.
If you like I can give you a ste by step guide. Hy, Im no expert but I have several db's split and accessed remotly by sales guys and engineers.

Rule NUMBER ONE!!
make sure you have a master copy of your database safely stored out of harms way before you go doing anything.
I’m paranoid, I always have a nightly FE & BE copied. Stating the obvious but people “forget” to backup and come to regret it... I have!
