Format as currency

Would there be a reason that a field might not allow itself to be formatted as currency?
I have a report that I have pulled a bunch of values from and it refused to format as currency. I have managed in the past to simply hide the field and reference it in another field and convert that field to cdbl and then format as currency but I am wanting to know if their is a real fix.

That did not work in the Report but did great in the query. Thanks.

Now I have format(nz(fieldname),0), "Currency")
