Format Date Field

I saw a thread once that explained how to format a date or phone number field after you've entered the data, but I can't find it again.

You do it so that you don't have the __/__/__ or the ___-___-____ pop up in the field and don't have to worry about inadvertently starting typing the data in the middle of the field instead of the beginning.

Anybody know where that thread is at, or know how to do that?
