Group by Query

I use lookups. Always have always will.

If you had 500 Employees and you wanted to select just one of those together with their details. Details such as address, Qualifications, DOB and spouse.

How are you going to find this information quickly and efficiently. USE a Lookup. The thing to be careful about is using these in Tables. You can and will run into troubles using them tis way. Save the use of them for FORMs

Second thing is that your table at a glance is designed incorrectly. I did not look closely at it but believe I am right.

This is why you want to use a Cross Tab Query. This will get you out of the trouble you should have never gotten into.

A Cross Tab Query is non-updatable. This is the first reason why you should not use them.

It is my opinion that you have been given incorrect information.

My first suggestion is to normalise that table and then start from there.

I have not tested so I cannot say for sure say I am 100% correct. But I do disagree with the bulk of things that have been written.

One last thing. Change what you are doing and you will end up with a quality database. Stay with what you are doing and you will have one problem after the other until you yourself have no Idea what is going on.

Good Luck with the project.

Rain, what a confusing post, you say he has been given incorrect information, you say that you use lookups but later say not table but in forms, well we have been discussing not using lookups in tables , nobody mentioned not using them in forms.

Ps have great holiday

Sorry about that Brian.

Which post/s are you referring to. I may need to apologise.

The use of table lookups is only discussed from post 31 and I think that Namliam and CJ are big enough to not be too concerned whereas I am ultra sensitive :D

PS Just back from helping grandkids open pressies, 4 year old got a drum kit and whilst he "played" the drums 2 year old hit the cymbal , my head is still ringing.

We are talking similar English but mine may be lacking.

There are a few things that the user could employ to simplify his design.

No Lookups in Tables is the first. This is opposed to a Table that stores the data for use in a lookup. This Table can hold a lot of information and can be updated as and when necessary.

I believe the table design to be incorrect. If this is fixed then the use of Cross Tabs is no longer required.

Sorry if I confused. I will let you get back to the drums for some light entertainment.
