until fields 2, 3, 4 change.. at which point they'd be in the cycle again.. like:
_______________record break________________

field 2 field 3 field 4

field 5 field 6
field 7 field 8 field 9 field 10
field 11

field 12 field 13 field 14 field 15
field 16 field 17

field 18 field 19
field 20
_______________record break________________

field 11

field 12 field 13 field 14 field 15
field 16 field 17

field 18 field 19
field 20

I'm thinking this has got to have somethingerother to do with access reports' "grouping levels," no?

edit: my text is "stepped"... it just doesn't display it that way.

I'll put a "-" for each level of "stepping"

I know that some of it anyways has got to be simply editing/formatting in design view... methinks.

Mr. Dot:

With the report in design mode, find menu selections "View/Sorting and Grouping." From your description, you should have at least two options for grouping:

Field/Expression Sort Order
Field 1 (Pick One)
Field2:Field3:Field4 (concatenated) "

For which you would need an expression within your query to concatenate the three fields you want listed together, or;

Field/Expression Sort Order
Field 1 (Pick One)
Field 2 (Pick One)
Field 3 (Pick One)
Field 4 (Pick One)
and in the options select "No" header for Fields 3 and 4. This will force a break for each new field 1, and for any unique combination of the other three fields.

Hope that helps get you started,

Matt

please define/explain "concatenated" - thanks

In Access help lookup "combine control values" and select "Combining values of fields, controls, or properties." There is an adequate definition with examples.

The idea here is to create one expression which contains a combination of fields 2,3, &4. If you group your report on this expression, each time a new combination appears you'll get a new section in your report...

expression, eh?

where?

there's no vba view for reports that I can find...

or is this in some particular properties field... ie "criteria" row/column of the properties of a particular field - as can be found in tables/queries

I tend to think in terms of queries; the Expression is simply the Access version of "Select AS" in sql, and allows you to present not only the table's fields for the report, but any combination, calculation, or even information not associated with _any_ field.

Easy to do: in query design view click the "Field" area and then push the magic wand in the icons at the top of the page. This launches the "Expression Builder" and you can create any "Field/Expression." Limited only by your imagination.

bump:)

just sending this thread north on the list in case anyone else has anything to add:)

a friend showed me some mdb's last night.. apperantly i am missing some "headers" to separate data group types etc.. so i am going to give that a shot this afternoon & see what i can come up with... no guarantees i'll get it right though.. i mean, c'mon - i am canadian.;):p:D
