I have been following a text book to try and secure a database, i set up the Work Group Info File, allocated a password, now even when i want to start a completley new database i have to enter a password.........

AND when i set up the password i must have enetered it wrong now i am completely locked out!!

Is there any way to fix this i cant do anything!! I cant even start on a completely new databse!!

Please help

It seems that you have overwritten your default system.mdw file? If that is the case: throw away the text book; it is giving you wrong information.
Using the Workgroup Administrator you can create your own system.mdw file. Usually i name it differently to avoid confusion. You have to get a clean system.mdw file to restore the default. Then create a new one with a different name. Based on this new mdw file you can create your own secure databases.

Store the information you use to create the new mdw file. With this information you can recreate it. Otherwise your lost. Are you lost?

yes i am lost :)

Can you go through how i would do this or is it too lengthy?

Just to note:

When i open access from the start menu and create a new database(or open and existing one) i get a window with my name in it asking for my password, the password i set up for this does not work and i connot do anything......

also access has created a shortcut on my desktop, if i open access from here it takes me directly to an existing database and requests the same password, this time it works!!!!

Will creating a new mdw file solve this? or am i screwed?

Thanks

Thanks

No, looks fine. My initial comment was too hasty.

You have created a database with the different workgroup. Now you are trying to open the database using the default workgroup. That's not gonna work because that what you were trying to avoid!

run: msaccess.exe \wrkgrp C:\temp\newworkgroupfile.mdw databaseyouaretryingtosecure.mdb

Ofcourse you have to rename all the paths.
Let me know if this works.

Try one more thing - enter username, but leave password empty - does it let you in?

hey guys thanks for your help, i got rid of the passwords in then end, not sure how i managed it, but i got there any way

Thanks

And then the all important thing to remember:

BEFORE applying Access Security to any database SAVE A COPY so you aren't hosed if you screw up with it when implementing the security and can revert back to the original.

Apologies for dragging back up an old thread, but I'm having the same problems, and would appreciate some help! I've just finished building and populating the database, and the last step was to create the different users etc. Never done this before so I've been poring over this forum and used the Microsoft Knowledge base Security FAQ's as a guide to get going.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/access/content/secfaq.asp

Decided to use an old database i designed as a tester to see if I could do it, before I even tried using it on the one i've just finished. Followed step one of the guide and created a new workgroup information file. Moved to step two, then three and created the password for the admin. Closed the db, and opened it back up again, but neither the logon screen, nor the password is the one I just created, but is the one for write access to another old database that is on the system.

This logon screen comes up every time I try to open any database, and was designed by someone else about 10 years ago - no one here has any idea of the password!

Because I used the default system.mdw when saving the workgroup file, might access have taken this old security file instead?

Can anyone give any advice as to how to correct this, or why it's behaving like this?

Thanks in advance, Dave

Ok, quick update

Turns out I was being a monday morning, heavy weekend prize A idiot. Change user name to the one I created, enter password, surprise surprise!!

Think I was thrown by it bringing up old usernames!
