Hogan,

Just join the "new" table to your current query with a Left Join and
specify that the name must not exist --> Table2.TheName Is Null

hi there,
thanks for that but could you explain a bit more - understand how to make a left join but how do I remove all the variables in teh list so i want all the smiths removed but i want a smith, D Smith, simon Smith etc removed is there a way to add an * to the query

Look up the "LIKE" operator in Access Help. It includes ways to use wildcard characters in partial or complete searchs.
