help with security

hi, please help. using win2k and a2k. (new to access)

i have played around with the "user level security WIZARD" but find it difficult! to set up a secure db.

i know how to protect the vbacode with a pwd.
i also know how to make mde file (but mde does not! prevent user from viewing/modifying design of db objects.) i did disable default shortcut menu, ie right-click, in startup options. so user cannot right-click and get design view (i use custom menu and toolbars in my db so no other toolbars or menus for design view available to user). but my db objects are still not totally secure (?) or are they ?


anyway, after i messed around with the security wizard, i can no longer MAKE MDE FILE !!! Access gives error: "Access was unable to create mde file".

how do i get my db back to a state where i can make mde file again ??

any comment would be appreciated.

Messing around with Security is a disaster waiting to happen as you have found.

I have a couple of files that include the FAQ's and step by step instructions. I cannot post them to the forum because the zip file is too large. If you PM me with an email address I will send direct to you.

Advice is.

Read all the documentation at least 3 times before doing anything
Take at least two backups before you start
Document everything that you do

Then at third attempt you generally get the hang of things and start to secure a database properly

Compile the code in VBA editor,

that is probably why you cant make mde.


if you have messed up the security, provided you have supplied an admin password, you could try creating a new .MDW file, but don't delete the old one as it might not work in which case you woul lock yourself out of the DB.

Setting up security

I am also trying to set up security and find the documentation difficult to follow and very cumbersome. Why can't anyone come up with a cookbook or simple check off list to follow?

1. Click on Tools/Security
2. Than What? User Level Security Wizard, User and Group Accounts, etc
3. Than What after #2.

It is not a simple area which is why there is not a simple wizard. It takes time to get to grips with it properly. The documentation I have does offer a step bt step guide.

However, since I am going to deploy the application on the network with half the clients having r/w and the other half read only, should I split the mdb first than build the security on the fe, or built the security than split the mdb?
