I am exploring ways of putting my user guide for my database into the database itself.

the idea being that the user can click on the help button and the link will take the user to a word doc, or a pdf to the chapter which is relevent to the screen they are on.

I may not have access to a pdfwriter, but I do know freeware ones are avaliable.

is there a way to link through to the file from an onclick command, and also then to locate a page number or ???? from the VB syntax??

I suppose the best way would be a pdf with each screen referring to a seperate thumbnail. but an unsure of the syntax needed.

any tips would be gratefully received.

John:

Create a command button and complete the following:

Right mouse click on the command button
Select Properties
Go to Hyperlink Address
Select the "..." button to the right on the line
Follow the instructions for mapping to an external file.

This will work if you decide to create a seperate doc for each section of the db.

Hope this helps.

ta!

that sounds a good idea, thanks..

How about a custom help file when you press F1??

I downloaded a program called helpscribble.
You will also need to download a help file compiler from microsoft or somewhere. Search for hcw403.exe

Helpscribble can be found by searching. Both are about 1.5 meg
Help scribble is pretty easy to use. Once you have made the help file, in the VB window go to tools, Properties and you can put the path to your custom help file.
Then in the properties of each form, under help context ID just put the no of the help file that relates to the form. (Will become much clearer when you muck around with helpscribble)
and bingo - when a user opens a particular form and presses F1 your help file opens instead of the Access default.

Good luck
Dave
