This is the second time I have not been able to Compact and repair our database do to this Access.LockFile still open. From my understanding this keeps tack of users on the database and goes away when everyone logs off the database.

Does anyone know how to get rid of or around this file?

I get a similar problem with my databases, where everyone is out of the databases, yet the .ldb file is still present...which will prevent open exclsuive and compact/repair.
In these cases, as long as I am sure everyone is actually out, I just delete the .ldb file. You can then compact/repair.
I am not sure if this is "proper" problem resolution, but i never encountered problems with doing this.

Normally when the db is closed by the last person, Jet automatically deletes the .ldb file. However, if that person doesn't have delete permission the .ldb file stays since Jet needs to use the user's permissions to delete the file. Occasionally if a db is closed improperly due to a system shut down or freeze, the .ldb won't be deleted.

Thanks Jings00 and Pat.

I was able to do what Jings said to do. Just have to make sure everyone is out then its does seem to let you delete this file.

Why do I keep getting an error message....

when I try to open my database? The database has been used by my colleagues for the last 3 months without any problems whatsoever until this week.
When they tried to open the database this morning (and yesterday) they were greeted with an error message and asked if they wanted to repair the database.

What could be causing the problem? I do compact the database on a pretty regular basis so am rather baffled by these error messages.

Further to my previous post...

I received the error message again, it reads as follows:

"The Database needs to be repaired or isn't a database file.

You or another user may have unexpectedly quit Microsoft Access while a Microsoft Access database was open.
Do you want Microsoft Access to attempt to repair the database?"

What's going on???

I've run into the same error message and I too try to make sure the users know how to close the DB properly but I still get it every now and then. I have not been able to link it to anything in particular.

But what is interesting is if some users are in they are not affecting only users trying to get in after something happens get this error message and can't get in. Then you have to get all the users off do the repair compact then let them back in.

But twice I have not been able to do the repair and compact because of the .ldb file not closing.

But if anyone as suggestion on how not to get this error message about needing to repair the DB, I would love to here them.

This might sound like a really dumb question but....

How DO you close the database properly?

I've put an exit button on the front page which activates a macro to close it down. I either use this or just click the X in the top right corner.

Is there some sort of procedure that I'm unaware of??

The big no-no (from my experience), is to NOT just turn the computer power off with your db's (and other apps), running...

AndyJ that is how I close the DBs too.

KenHigg's comment is the one that I know to stay away from. But sometimes the users get knocked off by something else they are doing which is something you can't get away from.
